Lighting Design for a Colour-Changing Facade

In 2013, we were asked to create a lighting design for a very large front and rear garden. While large-scale projects are not unusual for us, this client had a unique request: they wanted the exterior of their home to be lit using colour-changing LEDs.

The client had specific requirements for the fittings, which meant we had to develop our own bespoke lights. Each fitting also had to be addressable.

What Is Addressable Lighting?

Addressable lighting means that each individual fitting can receive commands separately from a central controller. For example, if you have 24 lights, each one can:

  • Be switched on or off independently
  • Be dimmed to a specific level
  • Display a different colour from the others

This system is known as DMX control — short for Digital Multiplex. It’s commonly used for remotely controlling intelligent lighting fixtures, especially in professional or theatrical settings.

The setup is complex and requires:

  • Professionally engineered fittings
  • Dedicated control equipment
  • CAT5 cabling (similar to what you use for broadband connections)

Despite its complexity, this system offers immense creative flexibility. With RGBW LEDs, users can choose from at least 16 million colours.

Our First Colour-Changing Installation

This was our first large-scale colour-changing project — and it completely changed how we thought about lighting design.

If you think colour-changing lights are tacky, think again. RGBW LEDs can create everything from dreamy pastels to punchy, vibrant hues. Once installed, the client used the system to set scenes for parties, events, and special occasions like:

  • Halloween
  • Christmas
  • Birthdays

Lighting a Private Athlete’s Gym

When our sponsored athletes Lucy and Reece Charles-Barclay asked us to design lighting for their private gym, we knew colour-changing lights would be ideal.

Their gym includes several different zones — including an endless pool — so we set up colour zones for each space. This allowed each zone to be independently controlled for:

  • Creating different moods
  • Supporting different types of workouts
  • Helping acclimatise to different climates based on travel schedules

For example:

  • Warm colours like orange and red simulate heat training conditions
  • Cool colours like blue help enhance focus and intensity
  • Softer hues like purple support rest and recovery

The Power and Possibilities of Colour Lighting

Colour-changing lights offer a powerful way to enhance both indoor and outdoor spaces. However, it’s important to note that this is not a budget system. It requires:

  • Thorough planning
  • Specialist fittings
  • Complex control systems
  • Expert programming

Unlike basic lighting systems, these are not controlled with a standard wall switch. Instead, you can use:

  • A digital colour wheel
  • A smartphone app
  • Customisable presets for quick mood changes

Once installed, the system is easy to use and highly versatile.
